Last Saturday evening, I went to JJ’s Broiler and had a wonderful time. I invited a few friends out to dinner, mostly because I didn’t want to drive to Lihue by myself. Sure, it isn’t too far away, but since my brother went home, I’ve been a bit more prone to spending time with friends. Plus, I thought they would really enjoy what I had in mind.
We got to JJ’s a little after 6pm, and we ate a ton of savory seafood outside on the patio. JJ’s has a great view of the ocean and the atmosphere was festive but peaceful as we enjoyed our meals. Then, around 7:00, we went upstairs for the Songwriter Showcase.
The Songwriter Showcase is scheduled for every Saturday evening this month, a time when up-and-coming songwriters and musicians from around the island can demonstrate their skills and sing to their heart’s content. However, this isn’t like Karaoke night at the local pub. This evening of original music is a planned event, featuring Lynn and Thayne Taylor with NTO.
Anyway, the evening was a big hit with my friends. What they didn’t know came as a big shock: Saira’s cousin was there singing a new song that she wrote about our adventures together. It was a big hit. Of course, she wasn’t the only performer of the evening. Several acts got the spotlight, from jazz and blues artists to Hawaiian traditional and rock music. It was a fun evening and we never knew what exactly to expect. Of course, that’s the way that I like it.
On the drive home, several of my friends announced that they will be returning to JJ’s this next weekend to watch the showcase. I think I’ll probably go with them. After all, there’s really nothing better on a Saturday night than a great group of friends, some live music, and some amazing food.
To keep Sam out of trouble from the sun and the surf, today I decided to take him mountain tubing. It’s something we’d always wanted to do as kids, but we never got the chance. Now that we’re adults, I figured there was no time like the present. So I got Sam in the car and off we went to Lihue and beyond.
Mountain tubing is a weird adventure, definitely different than you would expect. You see, over a century ago the Lihue Sugar Plantation hired a bunch of laborers to build the Hanama’ulu ditch system. This means that a series of canals and tunnels were cut from the rock and designed to bring irrigation water to the plantation from the waterfalls and streams on the other side of the mountain. Many of those tunnels are carved right through the mountain, so it’s kind of like spelunking but with water!
Using giant inflatable rings, tubers can follow the flow of water through the mountainside flumes and tunnels and finally emerge at the plantation. Along the way, you get to see many unique sites and remote locations on the island, which was definitely a lot of fun. I mean, I thought I’d seen the whole island by now, but Kauai is always surprising me. We had a grand time swapping stories with other tubers and laughing our way through the island, though Sam forgot to take off his watch and it got pretty wet. As I write this, he is in the bathroom with my blow-dryer trying to make it work again. Luckily for him, I remembered to bring the bug repellent, so at least he doesn’t have to use his Surfer’s Salve again.
If you are planning to visit Kauai, I can now beyond a doubt recommend mountain tubing to you as a great activity. Anyone over the age of 5 can go, though I wouldn’t recommend taking children who are afraid of the dark. And remember that you are going to get wet! So remove your watches and where a swimsuit. If you want more information, you can visit Kauai Backcountry Adventures online.
Okay, here is something fun for tourists and short term residents of Kauai. Did you know you can get a helicopter tour of the island? Well, you can! Believe me when I tell you that there is nothing quite like flying above the lush paradise of my hometown and seeing everything Kauai has to offer. There are unique features of the island that you can only see from the air, so a helicopter ride is your best chance.
Sunshine Helicopters (also known as Will Squyres Helicopter Tours) is a tour company that offers copter rides and spectacular aerial views for a pretty good price. And Safari Helicopter Tours is located right next door, offering rides in some of the best helicopters on the island. Only an hour of flying can get you into places you’ve never dreamed, observing vibrant vegetation, tropical rainforests, plunging waterfalls, and dramatic vistas. The helicopter company calls these places the unspoiled side of Kauai, the parts that only wildlife can travel. And you’ll get to see it.
If you want to go on a helicopter tour of the island, then head east. Sunshine Helicopters and Safari Helicopter Tours are both located in Lihue, which is off of HWY 56 near the Kuhio Mall. If you are coming from the airport, you’d simply have to take HWY 51 south to Rice Street, hang a right and travel up to Eiwa Street, hang another right and follow this street until it ends at Hardy Street. Go left at Hardy and take an almost immediate right on Akahi Street. Safari is at the end of Akahi and for Sunshine you’ll have to turn left on Ahukini Road. It will be on your left.
