Tomorrow, February 28th is Read Across Kauai Day ! It has already turned into a week-long affair promoting literacy, but tomorrow is the official day. Every day is a good day to promote literacy I think. Even reading online, like a blog, is a good thing. Read Across America Day is officially March 2nd. That is a Sunday this year, so schools are participating this week, the week prior. This is also Dr. Seuss Day; this tradition started for his birthday is the second of March. (Now you know the back story!)
In honor of Read Across Kauai Day , I thought it would be fitting to share with you readers, some books from Kauai authors. “King of the Beach” written by Mark Huff and illustrated by Swapan Debnath, is a children’s book about cooperation and imagination as a boy pretends that he is the king of the beach, with his little sister at his side playing along too. This dynamic duo have also put together a children’s book entitled, “The Sheltering Place” which tells the tale of three animals that live on Kauai. It shares a lesson on selfishness.
There is also an adorable book for kids that I have read, called, “Knuckles The Hound of Hanalei.” It s written by Susan Dierker and is illustrated by Melinda Sandler. What I love about this colorful children’s book is that it has a glossary at the back to help children know and understand Hawaiian words used in the book. What a great teaching book! For preschool, kindergarten, and even early elementary school teachers, I recommend this as a great teacher’s gift for the classroom.
These authors ,as well as others, will be out and about doing book readings at schools tomorrow, all across the island. Thanks to the members of the Kauai Children’s Authors Guild, hundreds of children on Kauai will be receiving books to take home! It is a day to celebrate reading and literacy.
